An exhibition of the work of Brighton university architecture students imagining a much needed creative hub for local artisans will be held at the Lewes Foundry this week.
Each project is considered to be based on financially and environmentally sustainable principals and designed to allow for growth or to be applied to other underused buildings in the Lewes District.

Making the best use of empty local buildings was suggested by many citizens panels involved in the Sustainable Communities Act process last year and have been agreed by the Local Government Association.

Lewes District Council agreed in cabinet this spring to proposals made by TTL and LTP that the Market Tower be made available to local people for three days per week for a range of markets... including a market for the sale of locally made crafts. Plans for a regular monthly craft market were developed and agreed this summer with the CIC who are currently managing the space but are still awaiting a change to the details of the lease to allow for subletting.

During times of economic difficulty for many there is now much greater urgency to find ways to support existing and nurture emerging local creativity. This exhibition may help to speed up this process...
