Details have been released today of the first nine electric cars that will be eligible for grants of up to £5,000 in a government subsidy scheme which starts in the new year.

Nissan has orders for 27,00 new Leaf cars worldwide , but sales will be limited in the UK by limited charging points, uncertainties about fuure government funding and possibly price.. well over £25,000! In Spain, which offered a grant up to €6,000 per car, a target of selling 2,000 electric cars last year was missed by a wide margin – just 16 had been registered by August!

Electric cars are still a dream for most of us... but in the meantime many used cars now offer economic, low emission motoring with low road tax costs. Road tax in Bands A to C is either offer free road tax or as little as £30 per year…
