More than 4.5 million UK households can't afford to heat their homes properly.  According to Friends of the earth :”Revamping homes so they're better insulated and cheaper to heat would save lives, slash fuel bills and tackle climate change.

Nick Gant of Inheritable Futures/ Community 21 drew attention to this misperception about the “green and pleasant land” of our rural communities at the recent Brighton University conference "Making the invisible visible" . City living is thought to generate a much lower carbon footprint than those in villages living "the good life".  Badly insulated housing stock, off grid oil heating and greater use of cars due to poorly developed and integrated public transport were suggested as explanations. It has been suggested that significant sustainability gains could be made through better focussing of resources within rural communities. The Community 21 project, to be piloted very soon, was developed in association with Action in Rural Sussex to encourage grass roots sustainable community involvement and to create a toolkit for other communities.
